About this deal

Feeding versus fertilizing - It's really a mistake to say that we're "feeding" our flytraps. All plants, including carnivorous ones, make their own food using photosynthesis. They use sunlight to make sugar which feeds the plant and provides it energy to work its cells and functions. What we are doing here is providing our plants with the nutrients that they need, specifically nitrogen. In people, getting energy and nutrients happen at the same time, so this point can be confusing for kids. Pin Venus Flytrap Experiments for Kids There's another really good book called Hungry Plants which is non-fiction and also very good. It's about all types of carnivorous plants, not just Venus flytraps. Pin These freeze dried meal worms are perfect for feeding Venus fly trap plants. To feed, simply place on the leaves with a pair of tweezers and the plant will close its leaves around it.

Caring for Venus fly trap has some added difficulty beyond most easy houseplants, however I would consider it a moderate difficulty level (you will see why below). I have grown Venus fly traps for 5 plus years and will share key information so anyone can grow Venus fly traps at home with success. Ask yourself; are the materials you’re using devoid of any dust, dirt, or minerals? If you’re unsure, thoroughly clean your glassware, drainage material, and hardscape. Step 2 – Drainage & Substrate Layers For flytraps, it takes 3-4 months for their dormancy to begin due to cold temperatures (below 50F or 10C) and shorter daylight hours. They will stop growing entirely before entering dormancy, which is when their upright leaves are removed. What length of photoperiod should a Venus flytrap receive during dormancy? If you keep the Venus flytrap outside or in an unheated garage or cool window, it will simply die. It should get plenty of sun exposure each day, regardless of the weather. Solution: Make sure your container is an open one, and no matter where you are in the world, you’ll need to find a very cool spot (between 0-10 degrees C) for the plant to rest each year. And a terrarium doesn’t allow for bottom watering, nor does it allow for the substrate to drain as well as in an open pot. The blooms are white with green veining, and about one inch in diameter. In the spring, plants produce three to five blooms on long stalks. The flowers are held high above the plant, to avoid luring pollinators into a trap accidentally, prior to pollination.

Secondly, you can feed your flytrap small bugs like flies to keep the nutrient levels higher and ensure some growth. Simply insert the bug using a pair of tweezers. How you acquire said flies are another story. These pots are great for Venus flytraps: https://amzn.to/3IYVGKU . Larger pots promote root growth and propagation 🙂Venus flytraps are among a small group of plants that are carnivorous or meat-eating. Also in this group are the sundew, pitcher plant, and bladderwort. These plants typically grow in poor soil conditions, necessitating additional nutrients from an outside source (bugs and other small creatures). They still get all their energy from the sun and moisture from rainfall, but their fertilizer so to speak comes from ingesting prey.
