About this deal

Alix's inability to read the situation, her apparent blindness to several red flags in Josie’s behavior and her insensitivity to some extremely disturbing aspects of Josie’s life was off-putting. Alix comes into her life at just the right time--a podcast host, she is the perfect woman to help Josie share her intriguing story. Her novels have sold over10 million copiesinternationally, and her work has also been translated into twenty-nine languages.

Josie reveals shocking secret after shocking secret about her dangerous past and even MORE dangerous present -- stories of grooming and abuse that haven't quite ended yet. She wears wide-legged trousers and a top made of two pieces of black cloth held together with laces at the sides. But according to Erin, Roxy wasn’t home at the time and I don’t think Erin has a reason to lie about that. Should you meet a birthday twin, stay well clear: it can only end badly, if this book is anything to go by.Josie and Alix couldn’t be more different; they come from different lifestyles and circumstances, and yet… Could they be more similar than originally meets the eye? Now Josie thinks he's a pedophile and has been sneaking into their daughter's room during the night. Alix Summer, with her seemingly perfect life as a podcaster and her seemingly perfect family in their beautiful house, and Josie, a woman from a council estate with a past filled with abuse, grooming and who-knows-what other horrors. Having grown up in such a household, I fully understand people being broken and needing help, but I found it a little insulting to be asked to see the character as a "good person" in light of the damage done.

She did marry Walter too young, and her children were challenging, and I think her life was not what she hoped it would be.

If Pat is telling the truth about being involved with Walter before Josie, then Walter did have a more age-appropriate relationship with Pat.

BUT after a very strong start, and me loving the short chapters the ending was kind of ambiguous and left me wanting more. Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. It means she’s wrong, that everything, literally everything, about her is wrong and that she’s running out of time to make herself right. One thing leads to another, and Josie convinces Alix they should make a podcast about Josie’s life, sharing her truth and making some big changes.

After reading the comments on this post (which I highly recommend) I am realizing that Josie is like an optical illusion. That would explain a) what Erin heard, b) Walter not wanting to go to the police and c) Josie saying she has to tell Alix “what we did,” meaning she wanted to tell Alix that they covered up Roxy’s crime. this book is full of unreliable narrators and characters who all have their secrets and hidden agendas and it’s so interesting to dive into everyone’s psyche. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities.

Married to a man significantly older, she has decided to change the course of her life in her 45th year. In light of the fact that Roxy killed Brooke and framed Josie, could Roxy have killed Walter and Erin? Pat (Josie’s mother) tells Alix that she was the one dating Walter, but then her teenage daughter Josie seduced him. After all, isn’t that why we love unrealistic horror movies, because we can watch but still feel detached from it all? When Josie proposes she be a guest on Alix's podcast to tell the story of her life, Alix is curious about this strange woman. As Josie slowly integrates herself into Alix’s life, into her very home, she’ll discover that Josie isn’t exactly who she portrays herself to be. I had a sense of panic from the beginning when the "birthday twins" Alix and Josie unexpectantly meet. A few days later Josie approaches Alix as she’s waiting to pick her children up outside school, and says she’s been listening to her podcasts, and wants to know if Alix will feature her, not as a successful woman, but as a woman who has some dark secrets but is about to change her life completely.
