Three models to suit your use – George GVE370-2’ Lite’– For wet use only, wet vacuum, carpet and upholstery cleaning, wet cleaning of hard floors. Mainly for those who don’t need an additional dry vacuum. However, there are caveats to this general recommendation. The first is that it’s a bit of a faff to convert the George between vacuum and carpet cleaner. The second is that, while it offers powerful suction, it’s not the most luxurious vacuum cleaner in terms of ease of use. The wet cleaning tools require some additional effort to use, but they performed brilliantly during testing. The George has a “two-stage” filtration system. In simple terms, this means that the combination of HepaFlo bag and TriTex filter catches most dust and other allergenic particles. The George isn’t the most convenient vacuum though. Switching to carpet shampooing mode, in particular, can be a fiddly process. If you’re not planning to use the hard floor or carpet cleaning functions on a regular basis, then the Henry is lighter, quieter, and easier to use.

The results are impressive. The George does an excellent job of cleaning hard floors in a relatively short time, so it’s great if you have tiles or laminate flooring. Price & Value for Money Converting the vacuum to shampooing mode is similar to the wet vacuum function, although you’ll need to insert the cleaning solution tank before adding the float valve. This tank contains hot water combined with whichever cleaning product you want to use. You’ll also need to insert a small tube into the cleaning solution. Like other members of the Henry Hoover family, the bags are self-sealing to prevent particles escaping during the emptying process. Bags aren’t as convenient as bagless canisters, but they allow George to hold huge quantities of dirt and dust. We also like that they are also easy to remove and empty without letting dust escape, which is particularly important for people with allergies.

It also fell badly at the Cheerio hurdle. In carpet mode, the floor head doesn’t have any space to let a Cheerio under it and into the path of its powerful vacuum. On hard floor mode, the extendable brush does have some gaps at the front, which let some Cheerios through, but it still pushed most of our test spill ahead of it. In a nutshell, the floor head isn’t well suited for larger particles. The Numatic Charles is the company’s basic wet and dry vacuum. It’s still a powerful model with a huge capacity, but doesn’t include the carpet shampooing or hard floor cleaning features of George. Verdict There are a few steps required to convert the George to wet mode. Firstly, you’ll need to remove the hose from the front, then take out both the TriTex filter and the bag. Once the vacuum is empty, you’ll need to attach the float valve. As the name suggests, this floats as the vacuum fills up, eventually becoming sealed once the vacuum is full to avoid overflowing. The George comes with Numatic’s standard Combi Floor Tool for dry vacuuming. This floorhead has two modes – carpet and hard floor – making it a solid all-rounder. Like most cylinder vacuums, however, it doesn’t have a powered brush bar. While these accessories are relatively simple, we like that they are well-designed and easy to clip on and off. The tools are designed to be attached to the curved handle, but if you’re cleaning in awkward places then Numatic has included an adapter to attach them directly to the hose. There’s also on-board tool storage.In terms of design, the George shares many features with other Numatic vacuums we’ve reviewed. Similarities include a cylinder design, four wheels, and the recognisable smiley face. It also has a 9-litre wet capacity, huge 15-litre dry capacity, and 6-litre extraction capacity, so you can clean for a long time without needing to empty it.
